Radiation hazards for cardiologists.

چکیده
Sir, The Editorial by Raphael and Tomlinson (1986;55:421-2) was an interesting review of some specific aspects of radiation dosage to cardiologists. The authors advised, quite correctly, that those performing catheterisations should be instructed in radiation safety practice before or early in their training. They did not point out, however, the complete absence of structured tuition in radiation physics and radiation protection for cardiology trainees. A trainee radiologist in his first year of training must attend a formal course of instruction in radiation physics (including radiation protection) and must pass an examination (Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists part I) before being allowed to continue and complete his or her training as a radiologist. Similarly, a student radiographer must undergo full formal training and examination before being allowed to expose a single radiograph without supervision. In sharp contrast with this, most cardiologists in the United Kingdom perform cardiac angiography without any formal training or an examination. While the clinical skills of cardiology are probably best learned informally during the course of clinical duties, the same cannot be said for the study of radiation physics; particularly when seniors are usually also untrained. The subject of radiation exposure is especially topical and cardiologists will leave themselves increasingly open to criticism if they continue their close involvement with ionising radiation without taking sensible action to institute proper training. The imminent Euratom directive from the European Economic Community may well make such training a legal necessity. A final related point is that the radiologist learns radiation physics not only to protect himself and others but also to ensure optimal function of equipment and thus optimal diagnostic accuracy. If a cardiologist without such training works in an institution which also has no integrated cardiac radiological involvement (as happens in many centres) it is a matter for speculation as to how adequate standards of equipment operation and angiographic quality are maintained.

Are Radiation Exposure Levels Used in Cardiology Dangerous?
Background: The number of interventional cardiology procedures performed has increased rapidly over the past years. While these procedures help physicians avoid using highly complicated invasive methods, it usually leads to high levels of exposure to ionizing radiation of both patients and cardiologist. The dose received by the cardiologist during interventional cardiology procedures is determi...

Background: The number of interventional cardiology (IC) procedures has increased rapidly. coronary angiography (CA) and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) are now widely performed as a matter of routine, and they are considered safe procedures for experienced cardiologists. However, it is also known that these procedures are associated with high radiation doses due to long f...
متن کاملReduction of Radiation Risk to Interventional Cardiologists and Patients during Angiography and Coronary Angioplasty
Radiation risk allied to invasive cardiology is relatively high, and protecting both patients and cardiologists is necessary. The aim of this review is to discuss how to better protect patients and cardiologists against radiation exposure. We performed a global search on PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus databases via keywords of "interventional cardiologist", "patient", "radiation", and "expo...

AIMS Interventional cardiologists who work in cardiac catheterisation laboratories are exposed to low doses of ionising radiation that could pose a health hazard. DNA damage is considered to be the main initiating event by which radiation damage to cells results in development of cancer. METHODS AND RESULTS We report on four interventional cardiologists, all with brain malignancies in the lef...
متن کاملPerceptions of radiation safety training among interventionalists in South Africa
Exposure to ionising radiation may have deterministic and stochastic health effects, which include skin changes, chromosomal aberrations, cataracts and carcinomas. Formalised training in radiation safety and protection improves knowledge on the subject and facilitates greater compliance in safety practices. This qualitative study included 54 interventionalists (adult and paediatric cardiologist...
